5-Year-Old Macarena Ayinloyah Adongo from Ghana Gets Cured of the Rare Brain Tumor of Choroid Plexus Papilloma after Her Treatment in India

A few months ago, Mercy Akabere clutched on to the CT scans and MRI reports of her 5-year-old daughter, Macarena Ayinloyah Adongo, as she went through the diagnosis of her painful sessions of incessant headaches and subsequent swelling of the head. The little one suffered from a brain tumor that developed in the ventricles of the brain, a condition known as choroid plexus papilloma or colloid cyst. Helplessness, bewilderment, tension and stress grew within Akabere as she knew that finding an expert doctor in Ghana for such a complex brain surgery was a challenge. Here, she tells her experience of how she and her daughter dodged one of the most fateful incidents of their lives after her treatment in India.

What type of a brain tumor was she diagnosed with?

The doctors in Ghana said that the tumor developed from the epidymal cells that are present in the neuroepithelial lining of the ventricular system of her brain. I was not even in a condition to understand what the doctor said; all that I knew was that my baby was in a terrible condition and I had to find a way out to cure it.

Where did she finally have her treatment in India?

She had her treatment at Fortis Memorial Research Institute under Dr. Sandeep Vaishya. He is the director and HOD of the neurology department in the hospital.

What surgical procedure did she undergo in the best neurology hospital in india?

She underwent a brain tumor excision surgery and shunting. Dr. Vaishya explained later that the tumor was located deep within the brain in one of the four choroid plexus which is responsible for the production of cerebrospinal fluid. He said that the tumor created an imbalance in the production of the cerebrospinal fluid that led to its accumulation in the brain resulting in intracranial pressure that manifested as the agonizing headaches.

How is she doing now?

She is doing fine. I was really very relieved when Dr. Vaishya said that the surgery is successful and the tumor will not recur in the near future. I know what I have been through in those four or five hours when she was in the operation theatre. It felt like time stood still and all I could do was pray desperately for my dear Macarena. But I am extremely happy now. Dr. Vaishya is such an excellent neurosurgeon and I cannot thank him enough for his miraculous treatment. I am grateful to FMRI and the patient care team in the hospital because of the dedicated care they have provided to my daughter. We never felt any kind of negligence by any of the staff at the hospital.

When did you contact Dr. Vaishya?

I got to know about Dr. Vaishya from the team of Vaidam. I visited their online website when I looked for the best neurosurgeons in India. They helped me to get an appointment with Dr. Sandeep Vaishya at Fortis Memorial Research Institute.
