Partially Blinded by a Recurrent Brain Tumor, 14-Year-Old Mihir Caunhye from Mauritius Undergoes a Successful Craniotomy in India

In spite of undergoing a brain tumor surgery in 2014, 14-year-old Mihir Caunhye again came face to face with the intolerable headaches and dizziness. The aggravating symptoms along with gradual partial blindness made him and his parents to drop in at the hospital again in Mauritius. After a successful medical trip in India, his mother, Mrs. Amrita Caunhye shares the experience of their journey from the frightening MRI reports to the happy, smiling and fit Mihir:

What did the doctors in your home country diagnose?

Our son was diagnosed with a recurring craniopharyngioma, the same kind of brain tumor he underwent a surgery for three years back. The MRI reports left us clueless as we didn’t know what else was to be done. Even a brain surgery could not cure it completely. Moreover, this time it was making our son blind as the doctors said that the growing tumor exerted pressure on the optic chiasm. We felt helpless and were scared.

What medical procedure did Mihir undergo this time to remove the tumor?

We traveled to India where Mihir got his treatment at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon by Dr. Sandeep Vaishya. He is the Director of the Neurosurgery department in the hospital.

What did Dr. Vaishya suggest?

After checking his reports, Dr. Vaishya suggested a craniotomy surgery along with shunting so as to remove the accumulation of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain which helps to ease the pressure.

How did the treatment turn out this time?

The treatment went excellently. The surgery took about three to four hours. We cannot thank Dr. Vaishya enough. He is truly a wonderful neurosurgeon and the best brain tumor surgeon in India. We did hear earlier that he is the finest surgeon in India and indeed he is. He has saved our son from so many complications that could have developed in case of a delayed or wrong treatment. Mihir’s vision is back to normal, the headaches and dizziness are gone. Our child is fit again and we are extremely happy. FMRI is surely one of the best hospitals in India that incorporates all the necessary elements in its infrastructure, staff and patient care team to provide the best treatment.

How did you get to know about FMRI?

We came across Vaidam Health’s website when we were looking for treatment options that would cure our son once and for all. After submitting an enquiry, we were called back by Vaidam’s case manager and were provided with the options of the best hospitals for brain tumor treatment in India. Our case manager helped us in getting an appointment at FMRI.

In what others did you get assistance from Vaidam?

The team helped us with everything we required to have a hassle-free medical travel in India. Before we even came to India, we knew about the hospital, doctor, treatment plan and its cost. Our case manager even helped me with e-visa application. The team had also arranged an accommodation for us near the hospital so that we do not face much trouble during our visits to FMRI. Their assistance is truly praiseworthy and I wish all the luck to them.
