Metastasis is a term coined for the spread of pathogen or tumor cells from one primary site to other parts of the body. It happens commonly when the cancer cells break away from the initial tumor or mass and get transported to other organs through the blood or lymphatic system. Metastasis can be towards a nearby organ through direct contact or may spread to distant organs through connective tissue. It is often unexpected and very less predictive. Causes intense damage to the body and its functions.
It is often very tough to detect and diagnose the spread of cancer, for the treatment part also. a systematic plan and thorough evaluation are required in order to achieve effective treatment. in some cases it is not feasible to operate on two organs simultaneously. A regime or combination of surgery along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy is done followed by immunotherapy and palliative care. The patient has to deal with side effects for a long time and has to be under screening regularly to check for reoccurrence. Sometimes in cases of advanced metastasis, it is not possible to give any sort of treatment.
