What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a type of aesthetic surgery in which fat removal takes place. It is a surgical way to remove fat from various body parts such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, face, hip, etc. when dietary and other weight loss methods do not respond.
Do you know that the number of fat cells in the adult human body is constant? Even after puberty, the number of fat cells does not increase, but the volume increases which leads to weight gain.
Also, liposuction is not an instant and direct weight losing method, one has to follow proper eating habits and a healthy lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that works to boost your self-confidence, but you need to discuss it with your surgeon before undergoing it. As long as, you have no serious health issues, your surgeon may give you a green signal for liposuction, However, your doctor may conduct some tests to determine any risk factors and take precautions if needed. In general, liposuction is suitable for:
People who do not smoke.
Individuals who are healthy and do not have any life-threatening conditions.
Adults within 30 percent of their ideal weight with firm, elastic skin, and good muscle tone.
Also, if you have fat deposits in other parts of the body where diet and exercise do not respond, liposuction might work for you.
What are the types of liposuction surgery?
After the consultation session is done, your surgeon may conduct some evaluation tests to avoid risks before surgery. Also, if you’re smoker, you need to quit smoking days before the surgery.
Now, before your liposuction procedure, the surgeon may mark circles and lines on the treated areas. The liposuction procedure depends totally on the type of procedure to be performed which is decided by your surgeon. Depending on your requirements, there are mainly four types of liposuction procedures:
Tumescent Liposuction: It is a common type of liposuction that requires the injection of a sterile solution - a mixture of saltwater with local anesthesia and a vessel-constrictor, epinephrine for fat removal. The surgeon then makes small incisions in your skin and inserts a cannula, a thin tube under your skin to suction or suck out fat.
Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction (UAL): Also known by the name, ultrasonic liposuction, this type of liposuction procedure is sometimes combined with traditional liposuction. During UAL, the surgeon inserts a cannula that emits ultrasonic energy under your skin. This inserted cannula ruptures the fat cell walls and breaks the fat for its easier removal. A new generation UAL called Vaser-assisted liposuction in which a device is used that may improve skin contouring and reduces the chances of skin injuries.
Laser-assisted Liposuction (LAL): This procedure used high-intensity laser light to break down fat cells for its removal. The surgeon makes incisions to insert a laser fiber in the skin to break down fat cells. The fat removal is done via a cannula.
Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): This procedure requires the insertion of a cannula that moves in back-forth motion. This vibrating motion of the cannula allows the surgeon to remove tough fat easily and faster. PAL causes less swelling and pain that allows the surgeon for fat removal with precision. This technique is also beneficial when large volume of fat needs to be removed or if you’ve had liposuction earlier.
Mega Liposuction: Also known as High-Volume Liposuction, is a surgical way to remove up to 10 liters of fat. It helps in weight reduction when combined with a healthy diet and weight loss programs. It is quite effective for overweight patients.

How does the liposuction procedure work?
Before the procedure, you may need to undergo some tests to check your fitness level for the surgery. You need to follow the following:
You need to stop the intake of regular aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs at least two weeks before the surgery.
Women who are taking the contraceptive pill, need to stop consuming it immediately.
Anemic patients must start taking iron supplements.
Now, during the procedure, the patient may receive general anesthesia or local/regional anesthesia which lasts for 1 to 4 hours.
If the surgery takes place on the lower part of the body, then an epidural may be used. In this case, the anesthesia is injected into the epidural space surrounding the dura or fluid-filled sac, around the spine to partially numb the spine or legs.
After the liposuction procedure
Once the procedure is done, expect some pain, swelling and bruising. Your surgeon may advise as required:
Anesthetic: This differs accordingly. Patients given general anesthesia need to spend overnight in a hospital, while in the case of local anesthesia, patients may be discharged the same day.
Antibiotics & Painkillers: To relieve pain, swelling and bruising post-surgery, antibiotics and painkillers are prescribed by the surgeon.
Stitches: In a follow-up appointment, the surgeon removes the stitches as required.
Bruising: Bruising and swelling are expected to occur in the targeted area.
Numbness: The treated area may become numb which should improve in 6 to 8 weeks.
