Living with constant pain can slowly take away the joy from everyday life. For Ms. Mariama Jalloh Boi, a 46-year-old woman from Sierra Leone, this became a reality as severe pain in both hips gradually made even simple movements difficult.
For over a year, Ms. Mariama struggled with worsening hip pain. Walking became increasingly uncomfortable, and daily activities that once seemed effortless turned into exhausting challenges. As the pain intensified over the last few months, she knew it was time to seek specialised treatment.
While exploring healthcare options abroad, Ms. Mariama came across Vaidam Health through a recommendation from Mr. Edward Brown Januje, a former Vaidam patient who had travelled to India for lithotripsy at MIOT Hospital. Encouraged by their positive experience, she reached out to our team for guidance.
At Vaidam, we carefully reviewed her medical reports and helped her connect with the right specialist. After understanding her condition and treatment needs, we arranged her consultation with Dr. IPS Oberoi, Chairman of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, one of India's leading centres for orthopaedic care.
Ms. Mariama travelled to India accompanied by her sister, Isatu, who remained by her side throughout the journey.
Upon evaluation, Dr. IPS Oberoi diagnosed Ms. Mariama with bilateral hip osteoarthritis, a condition in which both hip joints had become severely damaged, causing persistent pain and restricted movement. After a detailed assessment, Dr. Oberoi recommended bilateral hip replacement surgery to restore joint function and improve her quality of life.
In March 2026, Ms. Mariama underwent a successful bilateral total hip replacement at Artemis Hospital. The surgery was completed smoothly, and she was closely monitored by the medical team during her recovery.
Soon after the procedure, Ms. Mariama began rehabilitation and physiotherapy. With each passing day, her mobility improved, and the pain that had limited her for so long started to fade. She gradually regained confidence in walking and performing everyday activities.
Although doctors advised that she could return home approximately two weeks after surgery, Ms. Mariama and her family decided that she should remain in India longer to focus on recovery. As a result, she stayed for a total of 76 days, allowing sufficient time for rehabilitation before travelling back to Sierra Leone.
Today, Ms. Mariama is recovering well and enjoying a more active life. She remains in touch with her medical team and has been advised to share follow-up X-rays periodically so that her recovery can continue to be monitored.
"The pain had affected almost every part of my daily life. Walking was becoming more difficult each day. After my surgery, I feel much more comfortable and confident. I am grateful to Dr. IPS Oberoi, Artemis Hospital, and Vaidam Health for helping me through this journey."
