- According to a new Japanese study, the end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) that leads to Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) is caused by an increased rate of Nephrosclerosis in a patient.
- The study was conducted at Niigata University and published in the journal "Nephrology," "Trends in the Incidence of Renal Replacement Therapy" (2022).
- It showed that the incidence rate of RRT due to diabetic nephropathy declined in both sexes.
- The incidence rate of patients requiring RRT due to nephrosclerosis increased by 132% in men and 62% in women from 2006 to 2020.
- The occurrence of Renal Replacement Therapy or Kidney Transplant due to diabetic nephropathy has declined, and those due to nephrosclerosis have increased.

- The study has urged the need for an effective strategy to reduce the burden of end-stage kidney disease requiring RRT. This will curb the expected financial and health burdens of RRT in the near future.
- "Understanding recent trends in RRT incidence by disease type will help establish strategies to lower the RRT rates in the general population," says Dr. Minako Wakasugi, who is the corresponding author of the study.
- He also traces the need for effective strategies to reduce the burden of nephrosclerosis.
