Salpingo-oophorectomy is the process of surgically removing both the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. Salpingectomy removes the fallopian tubes and oophorectomy removes the ovaries.
A women can undergo salpingo oophorectomy if she is having ovarian cancer, endometriosis, benign tumors, ovarian torsion, pelvic infection or ectopic pregnancy. This surgery also reduce the risk of ovarian and breast cancer in those women who are at higher risk such as carrying BRCA gene mutations.
A woman can have a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, where both ovaries and fallopian tubes are removed, or a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, where only one ovary and fallopian tube is removed.
You should talk to your doctor about all the procedures of surgery and which surgical option will be the best for you. Your doctor will give you the instructions of avoiding eating or drinking for 6 hours before the surgery.
It will take around one to four hours for performing salpingo-oophorectomy under general anaesthesia.
In open abdominal surgery the surgeon will make an incision in your abdomen and removes the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Then the incision is stitched, stapled, or glued.
This surgery can be done both under general or local anaesthesia first laparoscope is inserted which is tube with light and camera so that surgeon can assess your pelvic organ and makes larger incision. Several small incisions are being made for surgeon to access the ovaries and fallopian tube and they are removed with small incisions at last the incisions are being closed.
You may need to be in hospital for night but in some cases it can also be done for outpatient basis. You will be prescribed with antibiotics to prevent infections. You can expect some vaginal discharge following surgery.
Some of the risks of the procedure are blood clots, injury to your urinary tract or surrounding organs, nerve damage, hernia, formation of scar tissue and bowel obstruction.
You should contact your doctor immediately if you notice some signs such as redness or swelling at the incision site, fever, drainage or opening of the wound, increasing abdominal pain, excessive vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, difficulty urinating or moving your bowels, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath and chest pain.
