Calcium Supplements Can Make You Suffer
While on one hand we can have a diet high in calcium-rich foods, on the other it is found out by the scientists in Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Washington that taking too many calcium supplements can put your heart at risk.
After conducting medical tests on over 2,700 people for the past 10 years, the researchers at the University have found out that excessive intake of calcium in the form supplements can damage our heart and vascular system.
As a person reaches old age, calcium-based plaque builds up in the body's main blood vessel, the aorta and other arteries, impeding blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attack.
Based on the total calcium intake they were divided into five groups. After several quesionnaires and tests the researchers found out that 20% of the participants had high calcium intake (greater than 1,400 milligrams of calcium a day) whereas the other 20% were found with the lowest calcium intake (less than 400 milligrams of daily calcium) being comparatively less prone to coronary artery diseases.
