An oophorectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both of the ovaries. The ovaries are almond-shaped organs that sit on each side of the uterus in the pelvis. The ovaries contain eggs and produce hormones that control the menstrual cycle.

In the oophorectomy procedure, the laparoscope is inserted into a tiny incision near the belly button. The surgeon makes a few other tiny cuts for tools to tie off blood vessels, followed by the removal of ovaries through a small incision near the top of the vagina or through small cuts in the abdominal wall. Finally, the cuts are closed with a few stitches.
