Dr. Seema Oommen

Dr. Seema Oommen is the Head of Department of Microbiology and Senior Consultant Microbiologist in the Comprehensive Laboratory Medicine Department (Co-Lab) at Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi, offering 25 years of distinguished laboratory leadership, diagnostic expertise, and clinical research achievements.

She earned her MBBS, MD in Microbiology, and Diplomate of the National Board (DNB), along with the prestigious Diploma of the Royal College of Pathologists (DipRCPath) in London. Dr. Oommen was awarded a Gold Medal for her landmark research in hospital-acquired infections and antibiotic resistance.

Clinical Expertise & Key Focus Areas:

• Diagnostic direction of accredited clinical microbiology laboratories covering automated blood cultures, AST, and serology
• Implementation of hospital-wide Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) policies and surveillance for multi-drug resistant organisms
• Leadership of multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship committees optimizing pathogen-directed antibiotic prescriptions
• Development of molecular diagnostic workflows for rapid detection of fungal, viral, and mycobacterial infections
