Everything You Need to Know About Balloon Septostomy: Q&A

Before the Procedure (3 Questions):

Balloon septostomy is the procedure which is used to expand the artial septal defect and improves the oxygenation of the blood.

Balloon septostomy is done to widen the congenital heart defects such as foramen ovale, patent foramen ovale or artiral septal defect.

The main indication for balloom atrial septostomy are transposition of great arteries with or without associated cardiac defect.

During the Procedure (3 Questions):

Balloon septostomy is being done by a cardiologist.

Patients are instructed to give their history of any infection, bleeding  or any adverse reaction to anaesthesia. Patients are instructed not to eat anything before 12 hours of surgery.

The cardiologist begins by making a tiny incision in the groin to access the femoral artery with a catheter. Once this catheter is in place, a deflated balloon catheter is inserted into the first catheter and guided to the heart. With the help of a small camera the doctor can see inside the heart on a video monitor then a series of x ray with dye and contrast are taken. Once the balloon catheter reaches the right atrium, it is passed through the heart defect to the left atrium and inflated. After it is inflated, the balloon catheter is pulled back to the right atrium, creating a larger opening between the right and left atria which enables the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to mix. After the balloon is deflated, both catheters are removed and the incision is closed.
