A large hole is present in centre of heart which affects all four chambers of heart, when your heart is divided properly the blood rich in oxygen from your lungs not mixes with low oxygen supply from the body. 

The cause of this procedure is not known but it is a very common type of heart defect seen in children having chromosome problem. In few children heart defect is seen along with AV canal.

In child having defect in AV canal the blood can travel across the holes from the left side of the heart to the right side of the heart and then passes into the arteries of lungs. The extra blood present in lungs is pumped into the arteries making the heart and lungs congested.

A child born with defect in AV canal may breathe faster than normal and may have trouble in feeding and growth is delayed at normal rate. The symptoms tends to become visible after few weeks of birth, high pressure is usually in blood vessels in lungs there can be permanent damage to the blood vessels of lungs.

This defect is commonly seen in two out of every 20,000 individuals, usually present at the time of birth and associated with Down syndrome.

AV canal can be fixed by an open heart surgery. AV canal doesn’t close itself, some type of surgery is needed to close it. Medicines only provide temporary relief with symptoms but they don’t cure the defect or permanent damage to the arteries of lungs. In infant having severe symptoms of high blood pressure surgery must be done in the infant stage only.

AV canal surgery takes about 4 to 6 hours and it is done under general anaesthesia.

One or two patches are used to close the chamber in the heart wall. These patches stay in your heart permanently and become a part of your heart wall.

Single patch technique is the best technique available for repairing the complete AV canal.

If the defect is being repaired you don’t need to do any special precautions related to physical activities and your child can participate in normal activities like other children without any risks. Only few children may need to limit their physical activity.

After surgery the child may be taken to the pediatric cardiologist regularly, in some cases some medical and surgical treatment may be needed.  When AV canal is normally repaired by surgery it restores the blood circulation to normal, the reconstructed valve may not work normally, it may leak or become narrow in some cases.

Many children with AV canal can lead their healthy lifestyles.  You child can do normal activities may have normal growth pattern. In some child amount of mitral or tricuspid valve abnormality is seen in which further surgery is needed.
