Vaidam Organized an Educative Session on Urological Procedures by Dr. Vikas Agarwal From Aakash Hospital
Urology is a vast discipline that deals with the surgical and medical management of urinary tract and reproductive organ diseases. Organs under the urology specialty include the kidneys, urethra, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, and the male reproductive organs. With over 7,500 kidney transplants being performed annually in India, the hospitals in the country have established them as one of the most sought-after options for urological procedures.
There have been significant improvements in the field of urology over time. With newer minimally invasive techniques and the use of robots, renal disorders are now easily managed without significant complications. To shed light on these advancements, Dr. Vikas Agarwal, Director & HOD of Robotic Urology, Kidney Transplant, and Uro Oncology at Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, came to Vaidam's office.
He explained standard urological procedures like PCNL, RIRS, ESWL, TURP, and laser prostatectomy. He briefed us about the kidney transplant procedure, which is only done when both kidneys fail. The minimum age for kidney donation is 18 years, with the maximum being 60. He also told us about the swap transplantations, which are done when a near relative living donor is medically incompatible with the recipient.
Other vital points he shared are –
- Kidney stones larger than 2 cm are treated with PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy). For obese patients, PCNL is performed in a supine position.
- Photo-selective vaporization of the Prostate, or PVP, is a newer technique of laser prostatectomy done to treat an enlarged prostate. It offers benefits like less recovery time, immediate improvement in urinary flow, no blood loss, and less than 1% incidence of erectile dysfunction.
- Laparoscopic surgeries are now being performed using robots. The advantages of robotic surgeries are better precision, less tissue removal, early recovery, higher magnification, and minimal pain.
The surgeon also shared various complex cases he operated on. One such case was a 98-year-old male who had bladder cancer. He was successfully treated with radical cystectomy. The combined efforts of an excellent multidisciplinary team and family support played a role in the success of the surgery.
