Research in recent years suggests that the lifetime likelihood of women developing uterine fibroids is as high as 80%. For women between their late teens and 40s, the estimated diagnosis rate is between 20-50%, and can be as high as 70-80%.

Fibroids are noncancerous tumours that grow in the uterus. Not all fibroids cause symptoms, but when they do, it can include:

• Heavy menstrual bleeding or prolonged periods

• Pelvic pain or pressure

• Pain during intercourse

• Frequent urination or urinary retention

• Enlarged or swollen abdomen

When dealing with uterine fibroids, women have two main surgical options to remove fibroids from the uterus: myomectomy and uterine fibroid embolization. While both offer advantages in specific situations, myomectomy is the more common choice.

On the other hand, uterine fibroids embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that shrinks fibroids by cutting the blood supply. Hence making a negative impact on fertility, which is why it's concerning.

For women like Ms. Patricia Sento, who desired to preserve her fertility, myomectomy became the preferred option. To address these similar problems, we at Vaidam organised a medical camp in Sierra Leone, where Ms. Patricia reached out to us.
