• 30-year-old B. Raju Naik suffered from aortocaval paraganglionoma located deep in the abdomen.
  • It is a rare kind of neuroendocrine tumor whose cancerous or benign features are difficult to detect.
  • Through a complicated robot assisted surgery, senior surgical oncologists, Dr Chinnababu Sunkavalli and Dr. Hemanth Vudayaraju, at Apollo Cancer Institute removed the tumor.
  • According to Dr. Vudayaraju, as the tumor was attached to two major blood vessels of the body, it was difficult to decide what would be a safe approach to remove it.
  • But robotic surgery provides the agility that goes beyond the limitations of traditional surgical procedures ensuring accuracy and perfection because of which the tumor was successfully removed.
  • The hormonal imbalance caused by the tumor resulted in uncontrolled hypertension along with severe headaches, convulsions, seizures, comatose, dizziness and partial vision loss.
  • During the surgery Naik's blood pressure was constantly kept in check through drugs whereas his condition was monitored throughout by an expert team of anaesthetists.
  • Post surgery, Naik recovered within a week.
