Degenerative disc disease in the lumbar spine, or lower back, is a condition where age-related wear and tear on spinal discs leads to lower back pain. This common spinal issue can result in disc bulges, herniations, osteophyte formation, loss of disc height, and disc desiccation.
Globally, approximately 3.63% of individuals experience lumbar degenerative spine disease and associated low back pain each year.
Eunice, a 62-year-old woman from Zimbabwe, faced a similar challenge. She was asymptomatic until a year ago when she began experiencing lower back pain. This pain soon radiated down her left leg, from tip to toe, and intensified over the last 2-3 months.
Her mobility was severely restricted, and she could barely walk 50-60 metres without needing to rest. Initially, painkillers provided some relief, but eventually, even they became ineffective.
In her search for treatment, Eunice connected with Mable, one of our former patients, who recommended Vaidam.
Eunice reached out to us via our website, and one of our case managers promptly suggested she travel to India for treatment.
Accompanied by her daughter, Eunice travelled to India, where she consulted with Dr. Sandeep Vaishya, a renowned neurosurgeon. After reviewing her lumbosacral spine radiograph, Dr. Vaishya noted:
- Straightening of the lumbar spine
- Osteophytes at multiple lumbar levels
- Reduced lumbar intervertebral disc spaces
Dr. Vaishya diagnosed her with degenerative disc disease of the lower lumbar spine and recommended transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgery. The procedure was successfully performed at FMRI, Gurgaon.
Eunice remained in India for 25-30 days post-surgery, receiving exceptional care and support from FMRI Hospital and Vaidam.
Reflecting on the experience, Eunice's daughter expressed their gratitude, "We want to thank Vaidam for their excellent service; thank you for your diligence and patience. You made our trip to India flawless."
Now, back in Zimbabwe, Eunice is slowly getting back to her regular routine. We hope that she recovers soon and look forward to seeing her back to her vibrant self soon.
