The liver performs plenty of functions in our body. The essential nutrients required by our body are turned into chemicals by our liver only. By filtering out all poisonous substances, it turns the food we eat into energy. Even a mild disorder in your liver can affect your whole body.
Major causes of Liver Diseases
Immune System Problems
The immune system protects our body from various bacteria and viruses. But sometimes they may attack anyone or many parts of the body.
Autoimmune Hepatitis – It inflames the liver, leads to disorders and liver failures.
Primary Biliary Cholangitis – It attacks tiny tubes in the liver called bile ducts that carry bile which helps in the digestion of food.
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis – It scars and blocks the bile ducts. It hinders the smooth functioning of the liver.
They inflame the liver. Viral hepatitis is amongst its common cause:
Hepatitis A – It commonly occurs by eating or drinking something that’s tainted by fecal matter. Its symptoms might not be observed and usually goes away by themselves within 6 months without any long-term harm.
Hepatitis B - Unprotected sex or taking drugs with shared needles are the major reason behind this. Lasting more than 6 months is likely to take the form of Liver cancer or other diseases.
Hepatitis C – It tends to occur when infected blood gets into your blood due to intake of drugs with shared needles or in connection with HIV. You may not observe any symptoms for many years.
Cancers and Tumors
Some cancers and tumors spread from another part of the body like the lungs, breast, or colon, while there is some that start in the liver.
Bile Duct Cancer – People over 50 years of age get affected by this cancer. It strikes the tube that runs from the liver to the small intestine.
Liver Cancer – If you have hepatitis or you drink much, you are more prone to liver cancer.
Liver cell Adenoma – It’s a non-cancerous tumor. Women taking birth control pills are more likely to suffer from this.
Hemochromatosis- In this condition the body stores up too much iron from the food. The extra iron builds up and form life-threatening
Hyperoxaluria – This occurs when your urine has too many chemicals in it. It can result in kidney stones and even kidney failure.
Wilson’s disease – Copper builds up in the liver and other organs causing nerve and psychiatric problems.
Apart from these, there are several other reasons also. Too much alcohol intake, drug overdoses, extra fat are few other reasons. Take good care of the liver by following a healthy diet along with regular exercise. If you face any other related issues feel free to consult Dr. Randhir Sud, working at Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon.
