Leading Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Puneet Kumar and Dr. IPS Oberoi Visit at Vaidam

With an objective of conducting an interactive session between the team and orthopedic specialists, Vaidam held a conference to have created more awareness related to joint problems and joint replacement surgeries.

The first session was held on 9th May 2019 in which Dr. Puneet Kumar was a part of the discussion. Dr. Puneet is a senior consultant at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh. He has an experience of nearly 18 years with specialized training in sports injuries, arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement. He has performed more than 300 joint replacements and more than 1000 trauma surgeries.

Dr. Puneet Kumar discussed several orthopedic procedures and diagnostic techniques. He explained:

1. Arthroplasty - This is a surgical procedure done to restore the function of a joint either by resurfacing the bones or using an artificial prosthesis.

2. Arthroscopy - It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure which is used to examine and also treat any damage in the joint. It is done with the help of an instrument called arthroscope.

3. He scattered some light on how the joint replacement is done for hip, knees, and shoulders. How the damaged part is removed and replaced with an artificial procedure. Furthermore, he addressed a major issue of the lack of diagnostic technologies in Africa.

4. Arthritis was another topic of discussion, which is the inflammation of one or more joints. The primary symptoms include joint pain and stiffness. It is of two types: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

In another interactive session, Dr. IPS Oberoi, who is the head of department in orthopedics in Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon. He has received surgical training in knee reconstructive surgery, shoulder surgery, knee arthroscopy and reconstruction, and many more.

He talked mainly about the limb lengthening procedures. The surgery is done in patients with leg length discrepancy, which means one leg is shorter than the other leg. During the procedure, an internal lengthening devices, which is an expandable rod is placed inside the bone. The rod has a magnetic system inside it. A handheld remote controller is located on the surface of the skin which uses another magnet to lengthen the internal device.
