Myomectomy
It is a surgical procedure done to remove uterine fibroids also referred to as leiomyomas. These are some common noncancerous growths that appear in the uterus. Uterine fibroids generally develop during childbearing years but can occur at any age. During myomectomy symptom-causing fibroids are removed and the uterus is reconstructed. Women who undergo myomectomy have experienced an improvement in fibroid symptoms, reduced heavy menstrual bleeding, and pelvic pressure. Your doctor generally suggests this when it interferes with your fertility or you want to keep the uterus and choose myomectomy over hysterectomy.
Procedure
Abdominal Myomectomy
Your surgeon may choose one among three surgical approaches to myomectomy counting on the dimensions, number, and site of your fibroids. In abdominal myomectomy, the surgeon will make an open abdominal incision to access the uterus and remove fibroids. He will generally prefer to make a low, horizontal incision, if possible. Larger uteruses require vertical incisions.
Laparoscopic or Robotic Myomectomy
In laparoscopic or robotic myomectomy several small incisions will be made through minimally invasive procedures to remove fibroids.
Compared to abdominal myomectomy, women who undergo laparoscopy experience less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and recovery, and fewer complications after surgery. Robotic surgery may be time-consuming and more costly.
Laparoscopic myomectomy. Your surgeon makes a small incision in or near the belly button to insert a laparoscope. A narrow tube along with a camera is inserted into the abdomen. The surgeon then performs the surgery using instruments inserted through other small incisions in the abdominal wall.
·Robotic myomectomy. The surgeon inserts instruments through small incisions that are similar to those in a laparoscopic myomectomy. He controls the movement of the instruments from a separate console. Some surgeons perform single-port laparoscopic and robotic myomectomies.
Take away
Depending on your case the fibroid may be cut into pieces or removed through a small incision in the abdominal wall. While in some the fibroid is removed through a bigger incision in the abdomen. The fibroid may also be removed through an incision in the vagina. Trust your doctor and feel free to talk about all your queries.
