• Indraprastha Apollo Hospital is gaining prominence in the treatment of the rare disease Crigler Najjar Syndrome.
  • The hospital has already provided successful treatments to five such patients who suffered from it.
  • Recently, a 13-year-old boy, Khalid Mohammad, from UAE got cured of this disease at the hospital.
  • Patient suffering from Crigler Najjar Syndrome has to undergo phototherapy sessions for 14-16 hours followed by liver transplantation because of the absence of enzyme GT that controls the formation of Bilirubin.
  • Because of the absence of the enzyme toxic form of bilirubin rises in the blood and effects the brain adversely with irreversible complications.
  • According to Dr. Anupam Sibal, senior paediatric gastroenterologist and hepatologist at the hospital, Khalid is now free from the congenital defect and is leading a normal life.
