Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
It is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart since birth. Small defects can be found by chance and still never cause a problem. Some small atrial septal defects can close on themselves during infancy or early childhood. Due to this hole, the amount of blood that flows through the lungs tends to increase. A large and long atrial septal defect can damage the heart and lungs. It may require surgery or a device for closure to repair atrial septal defects that prevent complications.
Symptoms
- Shortness of breath mostly when exercising
- Fatigue
- Swelling of legs, abdomen, or feet
- Heart palpitations or skipped beats
- Stroke
- Heart murmur
Treatment
Many atrial septal defects can close on their own during childhood. The ones that don't close on their own might not require treatment. But most persistent atrial septal defects require surgery.
- Medical monitoring
A cardiologist is likely to recommend monitoring the atrial septal defect for some time to check if it closes on its own. The doctor will best suggest that when you or your child needs treatment. It depends on the condition and other congenital heart defects.
- Medications
Medications are not enough to repair the hole. They may be used to reduce some of the signs and symptoms that accompany an atrial septal defect. Drugs may also reduce the risk of complications after surgery.
- Surgery
- Cardiac catheterization - A thin, flexible tube is inserted into a blood vessel in the groin and is guided to the heart using imaging techniques. Through this catheter, a mesh is placed to patch or close the hole. The heart tissue grows around the mesh and permanently seals the hole.
- Open-heart surgery - This surgery is generally done under general anaesthesia and requires a heart-lung machine. Surgeons use patches to close the hole by making an incision in the heart. It is the only way to repair premium, coronary sinus atrial defects, and sinus venosus.
Take Away
It is dependent on the type of defect, the treatment suggested, and the presence of other defects. Repeated echocardiograms are required after the hospital discharge. Simple atrial septal defects closed during childhood require only occasional follow-up care.
