Otoplasty
It is a cosmetic surgery to transform the shape, position, or size of ears. If you are bothered about the distance between the head and where your ear stick you can undergo this procedure. This surgery also helps with any mishappening or injury due to an accident or any birth defect. It can be done once your ears have reached their full size. It is done on both ears to obtain symmetry. It neither changes its location or alteration its ability to hear.
Preparation for Otoplasty
Consultation
Initially, you'll have to consult a plastic surgeon about otoplasty. During your first visit, you will have to briefly describe:
-
Your medical history. Inform your surgeon about current and past medical conditions, especially any ear infections. Also mention any medications you're taking or have taken recently, as well as any surgeries, have undergone.
-
Physical exam. To determine the treatment options that would suit you, the doctor will examine your ears including their placement, size, shape, and symmetry. Some pictures of your ears may be required for your medical record.
-
Discuss your expectations. Explain the reason why you want otoplasty and your expectations in terms of appearance after the procedure. Understand the risks associated with it.
Food and medications
Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, which can increase bleeding are usually said to be avoided before any surgery.
Other precautions
Your doctor will recommend stopping smoking before surgery and during recovery as it reduces the blood flow in the skin and slowdowns the healing process.
Before the procedure
Otoplasty can be conducted in a hospital or an outpatient surgical facility. Sometimes it is done with local anesthesia, which numbs only part of your body, and sometimes with general anesthesia.
During the procedure
Otoplasty techniques vary based on the required type of correction. The techniques used by your surgeon will determine the location of the incisions and the resulting scars. Incisions are generally made on the backs of your ears or within the inner creases of your ears. After making incisions, excess cartilage and skin are removed. Then the cartilage is folded into the proper position to secure it with internal stitches. Additional stitches are required to close the incisions.
After the procedure
Your ears will be covered in bandages for support. Feeling some discomfort and itching is quite common. Take pain medication prescribed by your doctor. To keep pressure off your ears, do not sleep on that side. Also, try not to rub the incisions. Wear light and loose-fitting clothes.
A few days after otoplasty, your bandages will be removed. Your ears will probably feel swollen and red. For about two to six weeks you'll need to wear a loose headband to covers your ears at night. It will help keep you from pulling your ears forward when rolling over in bed.
Talk to your doctor about when your stitches will be removed or dissolved.
Take away
An immediate change in the appearance of your ears will be observed as soon as your bandages are removed. These changes are now permanent. If you're not satisfied with the results, talk to your surgeon about the possibility of revision surgery.
