ECG is a short abbreviation for an electrocardiogram. It is used to measure the electrical activity associated with the beating of the heart since there is an electrical impulse attached to each heartbeat. This electrical wave is generated to cause a contraction in the muscles of the heart, which can help in the pumping of blood. 

In a normal situation, the right and left atria contribute to the first wave called a “P wave” after which there is a flat line. This is followed by the lower chamber on the left and right side. The contractions in the lower chambers are responsible for “QRS Complex”. The last wave is T wave is for the resting state of the ventricles or the lower changers.

ECG test is most commonly used to evaluate the effects of high blood pressure on the blood vessels. ECG is used to identify conditions such as :

How To Prepare Yourself for an ECG?

Before you go for an ECG you must keep in mind the following things:

• Do not apply any lotion, skin cream or oil, as they may interfere with the interaction of the electrodes with the skin.
• Wear clothes that can be removed easily.
• The person does not need to do fasting before the procedure. 
• It is crucial to inform the doctor about all the medications you take.
• Also, inform the doctor if you have a pacemaker.

What Happens During an ECG?

• As you enter the ECG room, you will be asked to remove any ornaments you might be wearing, as the metal objects might interfere with the test. 
• You would need to remove your clothing and you will be covered by a sheet or a gown.
• The person is made to lie still on a table or a bed without talking during the test.
• Sometimes, the technician may also need to shave a portion of your chest, arms or legs to facilitate the electrodes stick closely to the skin.
• Thereafter, the wires are attached to the electrodes.
• Once the procedure starts, the information is seen on the screen after which the leads are disconnected.

During the Procedure, 

An Electrocardiogram collects information from 12 different regions of the heart. The electrical activity in these regions is recorded as waves on a graph in correspondence to each electrical phase of the heartbeat.

• Heart attack - ECG helps in detecting the chances of a person having a heart attack previously in life or the one that may happen in the near future. It shows the extent of damage that happened to the heart.
• Heart rate - ECG can also help in measuring the heart rate if the pulse is weak enough to count the heart rate. It can also be used to count abnormally high or low heart rates.
• Structural abnormalities - ECG can also help with identifying the chances of having any enlargement in the chambers of the walls of the heart, or any other heart defects.

The electrocardiogram is most commonly used for the following heart disorders:

Types of Electrocardiogram

• Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) - This test is done to examine the cardiopulmonary system to diagnose any cardiac or lung-related disorder. 
• Stress test - A stress test is also known as a treadmill test or exercise EKG. The walks on a treadmill test during which the heart rate is monitored. It is used to detect coronary artery disease and a few other disorders.
• Holter monitor - This is done when the ECG is done continuously for 24 hours to trace fluctuations in the condition of a patient. This is called the Holter monitor.
• Resting 12-lead EKG - This is a standard test to note the heart’s electrical functions. This is done with the help of 12 electrodes placed on the chest, arms, and legs at the same time. 
• Signal- averaged ECG - This is a type of detailed ECG in which a series of ECG is taken in a period of 20 minutes to detect the abnormal heartbeats.
