Know about Oncologist
An oncologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. They serve as the primary healthcare provider for cancer patients, coordinating and managing their treatment. Oncologists must first identify cancer, which is often done by biopsy, endoscopy, X-ray, CT scanning, MRI, PET scanning, ultrasound, or other radiological means. Nuclear medicine, as well as blood tests and tumour markers, can be used to diagnose cancer. Oncology is frequently associated with haematology, the area of medicine concerned with blood and blood-related diseases.
Oncologist's Role
- An oncologist's role is concentrated on cancer therapy as a whole. Starting with the diagnosis, an oncologist is responsible for the following:
- Explaining the cancer diagnosis to the patient, including the stage.
- Educating yourself on the many therapy choices available
- Providing high-quality, empathetic treatment, therefore putting the patient at rest.
- Assisting the patient in dealing with cancer symptoms and side effects as well as possible.
- Maintaining follow-ups even after therapy has ended.
Types of oncologists
Oncologists might specialise in one of three types of oncology: medical, surgical, or radiation oncology.
Medical oncologist: Medical oncologists are experts in the non-surgical treatment and management of cancer. they use reliable sources, such as chemotherapy, biological treatment, hormone treatment specialised therapy. They coordinate cancer treatment regimens and keep a careful eye on patients for adverse effects. Medical oncologists also follow up with patients after they have finished their therapy.
Surgical oncologists: Surgical oncologists are surgeons who specialise in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management. Many patients who have cancer are sent to a surgical oncologist first. If a primary care physician suspects cancer, he or she will send the patient to an oncologist for additional assessment. Surgical oncologists can confirm a cancer diagnosis and stage the disease. Surgical oncologists achieve this by performing biopsies, which entail removing a tiny sample of aberrant tissue and analysing it for cancer cells.
Radiation oncologist: A radiation oncologist specialises in the delivery of exterior and internal radiation treatment to cancer patients. External radiation treatment kills cancer cells and shrinks tumours by using high-energy photon beams. Internal radiation therapy is a systemic treatment that involves the ingestion, injection or implanting of a radioactive substance such as radioactive iodine. Radiation therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with other types of cancer treatment. They may, for example, get radiation therapy to reduce a tumour before undergoing surgery to remove it.
