Abdominoplasty
This is a procedure done to remove sagging fat and skin from the abdomen. It also repairs any separated muscles in the abdomen.
The operation is done for cosmetic reasons wherein the aim behind this is to improve the appearance of a flabby or bulging belly. It can be caused due to overweight, aging, pregnancies, or rapid weight loss.
Many a time it is also be done as a reconstructive operation to:
- correct abnormalities after a disease or surgery
- correct abnormalities caused by obesity
- correct the contour of the abdomen after hernia repair
- fix structural defects of the abdomen
For many people, it is a great deal to appear perfect. Although this surgery improves the quality of life and overall appearance. Still, it is not meant for everyone. Abdominoplasty must be the last option when diet and exercise do not help at all. It is major surgery and requires a good amount of time and money.
About the Procedure
The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic. The different procedures require different techniques depending on whether you are having a full or partial abdominoplasty.
A cut along the pubic line will be made in a full abdominoplasty. Across the entire abdomen, all the excess fat and skin will be removed. All the slack or separated abdominal muscles are going to be stitched. Loose upper abdominal skin is joined towards the pubic bone and attached after stretching down.
In the case of a mini-abdominoplasty fat and loose skin is removed around the midriff only. During this procedure, a small cut around the belly button is made. And the navel is repositioned and stitched back in place. This naval cut may or may not be needed in a full abdominoplasty.
In both cases of the operation, the surgeon will stitch, tape, or clip the incisions together and cover the wounds with dressings. To drain the blood or fluid sometimes two small tubes are inserted. These tubes may be left inside for several days.
