What is Spinal Stenosis?
A collection of connected bones (or vertebrae) and shock-absorbing discs make up your spine. It safeguards your spinal cord, which is a vital component of the central nervous system that links your brain and body. The cord is held in place by the channel created by your vertebrae. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the gaps in your spine, putting pressure on the nerves that run through it. The lower back and neck are the most common sites for spinal stenosis. Some persons with spinal stenosis don't show any signs or symptoms. Pain, tingling, numbness, and muscular weakness may be experienced by others. Symptoms might become more severe over time. Spinal stenosis generally takes a long time to develop. Osteoarthritis, or “wear-and-tear” changes in the spine that develop naturally as you age, are the most prevalent causes.
Types of Spinal Stenosis
The many forms of spinal stenosis are categorised based on where the disease arises in the spine. It is possible to have many types. There are two forms of spinal stenosis.
- Cervical stenosis is a narrowing of the neck region of the spine.
- Lumbar stenosis is a narrowing of the lower back region of the spine. It's the most common form of spinal stenosis.
Spinal Stenosis Symptoms
- Lower back pain is a common condition. Pain can range from a dull ache or tenderness to an electric or burning feeling. Sometimes the pain is more of a pins-and-needles tingling sensation. Sciatica, An discomfort in the lower back or buttocks precede these shooting sensations down your leg.
- In rare situations, loss of leg motor function, as well as bowel or bladder function, can occur.
- Numbness or tingling in a hand, arm, foot or leg
- Cauda equina syndrome: This is the nerve portion of your spinal cord towards the bottom. If your spinal stenosis compresses this region, you may lose sensation in your pelvic area and have incontinence. If left untreated, it might result in permanent nerve damage. This is a medical emergency.
Spinal Stenosis Treatment
If non-surgical treatment (as mentioned above) does not improve symptoms, a doctor may prescribe surgery. There are several types of spinal surgeries available, and a neurosurgeon will assist evaluate which treatment is best for the patient based on the circumstances. Decompressive laminectomy is the most common lumbar spine surgery, in which the laminae (roofs) of the vertebrae are removed to allow more space for the nerves.
