What is deep brain stimulation ( DBS )?

Deep brain stimulation is a procedure that involves implanting a device that transmits electrical signals to the parts of the brain that control movement. Deep in the brain, electrodes are implanted and linked to a stimulator device. A neurostimulator, like a cardiac pacemaker, utilises electric pulses to control brain activity. Parkinson's disease, dystonia, or essential tremor can cause tremor, slowness, stiffness, and walking difficulties, which can be improved by DBS. People who get successful DBS may be able to reduce their drug use and enhance their quality of life.

A DBS system has four parts:

  • A lead is a tiny cable that is inserted into the region of your brain that is generating symptoms.
  • A pulse generator provides small electrical signals to the lead, similar to a pacemaker.
  • A wire that links the pulse generator to the lead.
  • The only part outside your body is a remote control to program the system

How is the Surgery Performed?

The surgery is performed by the best neurosurgeons in IndiaThe lead will be implanted in your brain, and the pulse generator will be implanted in your chest. They're sometimes done at the same time, but the lead is usually put in first. The pulse generator a few weeks later. Your surgeon will need a technique to assist them to navigate through your brain accurately during the surgery. After your scalp has been numbed, a wireframe is usually inserted into your skull. Instead of using a frame, some surgeons utilize plates that are screwed in the day before surgery. With the frame or plates in place, you'll undergo a brain scan to build a "map". After that, your physician creates a dime-sized hole in your head. They'll look for the perfect position to insert the lead using a special probe that connects to the frame or plates. You may also be required to respond to questions or move certain body parts. It's a sensitive procedure that might take a long time, which is why learning relaxing techniques before the procedure is beneficial.

After surgery

After the DBS has been programmed, you will be sent home with instructions on how to modify your stimulation on your own. You may use the portable controller to turn the stimulator on and off, choose programmes, and change the stimulation strength. The majority of patients leave their DBS system all day and night. Some essential tremor sufferers can use it throughout the day and turn it off at night.
