Truncus Arteriosus
This rare heart defect is present since birth. Suffering from truncus arteriosus means that there is one large blood vessel that leads out of the heart. Two vessels are coming out of the heart. A ventricular septal defect that is generally a hole between two chambers of the heart also exists. Due to truncus arteriosus, there occurs a mixture of oxygen-poor blood that need to attend the lungs and oxygen-rich blood that need to attend the rest of the body. This generates severe circulatory problems. When left untreated truncus arteriosus can be fatal. Surgery to rectify truncus arteriosus is most successful when repair occurs before the baby is 1 month old.
Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of truncus arteriosus develop within the first few days of life including:
- · Excessive sleepiness
- · Poor growth
- · Shortness of breath
- · Rapid breathing
- · Blue colouring of the skin
- · Poor feeding
- · Pounding heart
Causes
When your baby's heart is developing in the womb it is the time when Truncus arteriosus occurs. In utmost cases the cause is unknown.
The Heart
The four pumping chambers that circulate your blood control the flow of blood, opening, and closing to ensure that blood flows in a single direction. The heart's four chambers are The Right Atrium, The Right Ventricle, The Left Atrium, and the Left Ventricle.
Normal Heart Development
The formation of the foetal heart is complex and every one babies have one large vessel. During normal development of the heart, this very large single vessel diverts into two parts where one part becomes the lower portion of the aorta, and the other part becomes the lower portion of the arterial pulmonalis.
Truncus Arteriosus In Newborns
- · The single large vessel never finished splitting into two separate vessels
- · The wall separating the 2 ventricles never closed completely
- · A single blood vessel arises from the heart
- · There occurs a large hole between the two chambers.
· The valve controlling blood flow from the ventricles to the single large vessel is also defective. It does not close completely that allows blood to flow backward into the heart.
