Gynaecologic Cancer
Uterus also known as a woman's womb is the part where the complete reproductive system is centred. The ovaries are attached to the top of the uterus and the vagina connects the uterus to the outside of the body. The external genitals are classified as the vulva. Gynaecologic cancers occur due to the rapid growth and spread of abnormal cells in any of these organs or complete body.
Gynaecologic cancers are quite uncommon as compared to other types of cancer like breast or colon cancer. Women are generally at a risk for developing gynaecologic cancers that increase with age. It’s important to observe and keep a check on the warning signs. Treatments are best when the cancer is found at an early stage.
Types of Gynaecologic Cancers
There are five major types:
- Cervical cancer
- Uterine cancer
- Vulvar cancer
- Ovarian cancer

For the proper treatment, it becomes very important to know the type and exact location of cancer.
Determinants that increase the risk of gynaecologic cancer
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Age
- Genetics
- Diethylstilboestrol Exposure
Symptoms
- abnormal vaginal bleeding
- discharge
- pelvic pain
- bloating
- constipation
- increased need to urinate
- itching and soreness
Treatment
Treatment depends on many different factors including whether cancer has spread, or whether the patient is young enough to have children. Surgery is the best option in the case of advanced disease.
Patients with cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancers have to undergo a Hysterectomy i.e., removal of the uterus. To prevent cancer from spreading doctors may suggest radiation therapy or chemotherapy to prevent cancer from spreading further.
Take away
Patients who suffer from more aggressive cancer have a much higher chance of it metastasizing to other areas. Even after surgery, it has a chance of occurring back. The doctor must be experiment enough to understand the biology of these aggressive cancers and their treatment.
