Mr. Sylvester Akpabio, a 52-year-old Nigerian entrepreneur, felt helpless when he could not find any proper diagnosis about his physical ailment. Finally, when he got to know from one of his local doctors that his heart had three blockades and requires a CABG surgery, he sought for the right hospital that would provide him with affordable medical treatment. It was at this time that one of his friends recommended him Vaidam Health in India. Now, with a happy heart he shares his experience:
Why did you choose India over other countries?
Well, I couldn’t find a suitable doctor for my treatment. Moreover, other countries are expensive too. India is one such place that provides you with the right treatment at a price that you can afford. They don’t burden you with unnecessary bills that are sufficient enough to give you a heart attack.
Who accompanied you to India?
I came alone.
Didn’t you feel nervous?
Yes, initially I did. But later it was fine. Everyone is so cordial and warm here. My doctor was so helpful and also the team of Vaidam Health, they stood by me throughout the whole time. I am very happy that I came here for my treatment.
What was your immediate reaction when your friend told you about Vaidam?
I was very skeptical about it. It was difficult to rely on someone about whom I didn’t know anything, especially when almost fifteen to twenty doctors in my own country couldn’t even say what problem I had. But after talking to and reading about them I gradually started to think that these people are reliable.
How did you choose the doctor and the hospital?
After I had sent my reports, the team of Vaidam recommended me four or five hospitals and doctors out of which I chose Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, which I’ve heard is one of the best cardiac hospitals in India. Vaidam had also arranged a telephonic conference with me and my doctor, Dr. Y.K Mishra and that helped me a lot.
How did you choose your accommodation?
Vaidam recommended me some hotels and guest houses out of which I chose the one that was nearest to the hospital.
Tell us about your experience with the doctor and the hospital.
It was very good. I loved it. Everything was so systematic and organized. It has very modern infrastructure and is well-equipped. The staff is very warm and helpful. Dr.Mishra is an expert Cardiologist. I am lucky that I met him and he did my surgery.
How many days did you have to stay in India?
Two weeks. I had to spend eight days in the hospital. I stayed in the ICU for three days and recovered fast.

How did Vaidam help you in these two weeks?
They helped me a lot and they have a very good idea about the medical industry. I was highly impressed when the cost of my surgery matched exactly to the cost estimate they had sent me. They took complete care of me. Since I had travelled alone, Vaidam team arranged a qualified nurse for me during my stay in the hotel after I was discharged from the hospital. The patient manager used to visit me almost everyday. While I was in ICU, It was very sweet of them to arrange video calls with my family so that I don’t miss them and feel low. They also helped me to shop and dine.
Did you do any other check-ups here?
After I recovered, I took some dental treatments and some other body tests at Fortis Escorts.
Was the travel comfortable?
Yes it was comfortable but I had some problems in getting my visa because of the documentation of the doctor’s report. I travelled by Ethiopian Airlines from Lagos.
Would you like to give any suggestions for the people who are willing to travel to India for their treatment?
- While applying for Visa make sure your documents are correct as they may pose problems and delays.
- If you are using Visa agent's services, try to have a feedback regarding them as they can be too careless at times.
- Everything else is just fine here, if you have made up your mind for travel, go for it.
