As the 37-Year-Old Strummed on His Guitar, Neurosurgeons at Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain Hospital Performed the First Live Brain Circuit Surgery

• 37-year-old Abhishek Prasad strummed along his acoustic guitar while neurosurgeons at Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Bengaluru drilled his skull to perform the Indian's first live brain circuit surgery.
• Being a musician, Prasad suffered from a rare neurological condition named dystonia that occurs to about 1 per cent of professional musicians.
• The disorder triggered whenever he tried to play the instrument leading to painful spasms and stiffening four of the fingers in his left hand.   
• The 7 hour long surgery involved insertion of an 8-9 cm long electrode into his brain through a 14 mm whole in his skull so as to stimulate a specific nerve to confirm the target location while avoiding complications to the other circuits.
• Post reconfirming the target location of treatment, with the help of an RF ablation machine a radio frequency lesion was made.
• According to the neurosurgeon, Dr.Sharan Srinivasan, Prasad's live feedback was important so as to confirm the exact location to be lesioned.
• After nine days of his surgery Prasad could again play the guitar proficiently.
