Mr. Nischal Ramhit, a 54-year-old man from Mauritius, had been living with a nerve condition for more than 20 years. His health problems first began in 2001, when he was treated for Guillain-Barre syndrome and improved with steroids. However, the weakness returned in 2011.

Over the years, he was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), a condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of the nerves, leading to weakness in the arms and legs.

For several years, Mr. Nischal's condition was managed with steroids, immunosuppressant medicines, and regular IVIG infusions. The treatments helped him for a long time, and he was able to manage his condition. But gradually, they became less effective.

His CIDP was eventually considered refractory, meaning that the usual treatments were no longer controlling the condition well enough. His doctors then advised the family to consider an autologous stem cell transplant, which uses the patient's own stem cells as part of treatment to help reset the immune system.

For Mr. Nischal and his family, this was a major decision. The treatment was not available close to home in Mauritius, and they were unsure where to go, which hospital to choose, and how they would manage such a long medical journey in another country. At that point, a friend suggested that they contact Vaidam Health.

The family shared Mr. Nischal's previous medical reports and treatment history with the Vaidam team. The team helped them connect with transplant specialists, understand the treatment plan, and get a clear estimate of the expected cost. His dedicated case manager also explained what they could expect, from hospital visits and treatment to recovery and follow-up.

After learning about the treatment options available, the experience of the medical team, and the support available to international patients, Mr. Nischal chose India for his treatment. He decided to undergo treatment under Dr. Ankit Kumar at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi.

The Vaidam team helped the family manage travel arrangements from Mauritius to India. This included the medical visa invitation letter, airport pickup, accommodation, hospital appointments, and coordination with the medical team.

A dedicated person was also available to assist Mr. Nischal and his family during their stay. This support helped them focus more on his treatment instead of worrying about the many arrangements involved in travelling abroad for medical care.

Mr. Nischal travelled to New Delhi with his father, who stayed with him during the early part of his journey. His pre-transplant evaluation started in July 2026. He underwent detailed tests, including a bone marrow examination, which showed that his bone marrow was functioning normally.

However, before the transplant could take place, Mr. Nischal suddenly developed increased weakness. Dr. Ankit Kumar and the neurology team treated him with intravenous steroids and IVIG. To make sure he was strong enough for the procedure, the transplant was postponed until he had recovered. The family was kept informed about his condition and the reason for the change in plan.

Once Mr. Nischal became stable, his treatment continued as planned. His stem cells were collected on 13 August 2026. He then received conditioning treatment to prepare his body for the transplant.

On 18 August 2026, he underwent his autologous stem cell transplant. The infusion was well tolerated, and he remained in the transplant unit for close monitoring and care.

On 28 August 2026, doctors confirmed engraftment, meaning the returned stem cells had started producing new blood cells. His records showed no graft-versus-host disease and no mucositis during this period.

After continuing to recover under medical supervision, he was discharged in stable condition on 1 September 2026.

Mr. Nischal stayed in Delhi to recover rather than returning home immediately. During this time, he followed the doctors' advice about food, hygiene, infection prevention, and regular medical check-ups. He also attended follow-up appointments with both the haematology and neurology teams.

His entire stay in India lasted about two months. Throughout this period, the Vaidam team remained in regular contact with him and his family, helping with appointments and other practical needs.

When it was time to return to Mauritius, Mr. Nischal had a follow-up plan in place and could continue his recovery at home with ongoing guidance.

Looking back on his journey, Mr. Nischal said, “I had been living with this condition for many years, so when the treatments that had helped me before stopped working, my family and I were very worried about what would happen next. When we were told that a stem cell transplant could be an option, we knew that it was a big decision, especially because we would have to travel outside Mauritius for treatment. A friend told us about Vaidam, and contacting them gave us a clear direction. They listened to my medical history, helped us understand the treatment, and guided us in choosing India. They arranged the doctor, hospital, visa invitation letter, airport pickup, accommodation, and appointments. During our two months in Delhi, they continued to check on my father and me and helped us whenever we needed assistance. When my transplant had to be postponed because I became weak, they kept us informed and supported us through that period as well. Dr. Ankit Kumar and the Max team explained my treatment patiently and answered our questions at every stage. My father and I are very thankful to everyone who supported us throughout this journey.”

For Mr. Nischal, the journey from Mauritius to India involved many unfamiliar steps, but having medical guidance and practical support throughout the process helped make the experience easier to manage. After years of living with CIDP and trying different treatments, Mr. Nischal was able to undergo an autologous stem cell transplant in India and return home with a planned schedule for continued follow-up and recovery.

Vaidam Health wishes Mr. Nischal Ramhit a steady recovery, returning strength, and many healthy years ahead with his family in Mauritius. It was a privilege to support Mr. Nischal throughout his treatment journey in India.
