If you’re an international patient and planning to undergo kidney transplant in India, you must apply under the medical visa category. The attendant with you should apply for an attendant medical visa. 

The kidney transplant donors are usually a close family member who is healthy and willing to donate a part of their liver to the patient. International patients are advised to bring their donor to prevent any chances of host rejection and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Hospitals cannot provide a donor due to compatibility concerns.

Hospitals in India have a Transplant committee that decides whether to perform a kidney transplant on a patient. This committee discusses the patient’s kidney condition, after which it verifies and authorises the procedure. 

The average hospital stay for patients after a liver transplant is 3 weeks based on the patient’s recovery and 10 days for the donor in the liver transplant unit. Afterwards, they can recover at home for a month and have to follow the recommended diet and take prescribed medication as per their surgeon’s recommendations.

The patients have to stay for approximately 3 weeks after a liver transplant to recover completely whereas a donor has to stay for at least 10 days in the kidney transplant unit. Afterwards, they can recover at home for a month and have to follow the suggested diet and take prescribed medication.
