Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

As per the guidelines mentioned in NGSCR (2017), BMT is primarily used for various haematological malignancies and autoimmune disorders. The use of stem cells in treatments other than those mentioned in Annexure 1 is still under clinical trial and, hence, is not allowed.

The factors influencing the cost of BMT in India include the type of transplant (autologous or allogeneic), the complexity of the surgical procedure and the hospital stay of the patient post-transplant.

The hospital conducting BMT follows the guidelines presented by the National Guidelines for Stem Cell Research (NGSCR), which lists the approved indications for the use of stem cells in medical intervention. To conduct a bone marrow transplant, the hospital must be registered under the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).

If you’re an international patient and planning to take BMT treatment in India, you must apply under the medical visa category. The donor with you should apply for a visa under the medical attendant category.

After the BMT, the patient is highly susceptible to infections; hence, hospitals provide post-treatment care to the patients, which includes close monitoring of health under isolation, regular medications and any other medical support required.

Once the bone marrow infusion is over, the patient is kept under isolation for 4-6 weeks as they are immunocompromised and should not be exposed to any infection. Post-hospital recovery depends on the patient’s health and takes 6-8 weeks. Thus, total stay for the patient in India would be 3 months.

To become a bone marrow donor, one must age between 18-60 years along with a close HLA typing match. If any of the family members are not compatible donors for the patient, their doctor can search the registered bone marrow banks that have a list of volunteers for bone marrow donation.

You can check if they have been approved and authorised under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994. It ensures that the transplant is being performed by the authorised group of experts with specialised facilities without compromising the health of the patient.

Bone marrow transplant hospitals in India are equipped with advanced lab technology and provide the following facilities to the patients.

  • High-tech laboratories to conduct HLA typing tests, comprehensive metabolic panels , bone marrow aspiration, along with availability of infusion pumps, flow cytometers, blood analysers
  • Advanced BMT Units with ICUs and cubicles provided with air quality monitoring systems designed to prevent infections in immunocompromised patients
  • HEPA-filtered rooms filter out airborne particles 0.3 microns or larger, including dust, allergens, bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.

If you’re looking for top BMT hospitals in India, verify that it is a JCI & NABH-accredited and registered under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994. You should also examine the hospital’s approach to post-transplant care and other medical facilities they provide.
