After he received his medical education, he trained for the title of Doctor of Medicine at the Department of Hematology, Oncology, and Rheumatology at the University Hospital Heidelberg in 1984.
Later, he did his Research Internship at the German Cancer Society, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Toronto, Canada in 1985 and also Habilitation and Venia Legendi, Internal Medicine in 1991.
