Vitrectomy is a surgery to remove some or all of the vitreous humor from the eye. Anterior vitrectomy entails removing small portions of the vitreous humor from the front structures of the eye often because these are tangled in an intraocular lens or other structures.

During the Vitrectomy procedure, there is the insertion of trocars in the pars plana (3.0-4.0mm from the limbus depending on the lens status) typically using a beveled incision technique. Then, a core vitrectomy is done to remove the central vitreous gel, followed by the induction of a posterior vitreous detachment.
