Pessary is mostly used by those women who have  vaginal prolapsed and they want to avoid surgery or  they have some medical conditions which can make surgery too risky for them.

Some of the advantages of using a pessary is that it can reduce or lessen the symptoms of vaginal prolapse but it does not stop you from having sex and it is less invasive procedure.

While inserting the pessary you may feel some discomfort and pain when the pessary is inserted but it is not painful at all, you have to make sure that pressure does not fall out and you can pass out urine easily.

First a small amount of water soluble lubricant is kept on insertion edge then the pessary is put in one hand and the lips of the vagina are spreaded with other hand at last the pessary is pushed as far into vagina as it will go.

If the pessary is fitted well in the vaginal region it will not be felt in the vaginal region while the pessary will not cause low abdominal or vaginal discomfort or pain while lying in upright or down position,  while some women may some discomfort when the pessary is being inserted.

Pessary can be left in place for four to six months or more than it. Other than this pessary used for women having advanced degree of vaginal prolaspse should be removed every night.

Some of the side effects of using a pessary includes vaginal irritation, four  smelling discharge and urinary tract infections. If the pessary is removable any side effects can be corrected easily. 

You should visit your doctor when you notice any symptoms such as foul- smelling discharge, irritation, bleeding, passing small amount of urine during exercise or sneezing, difficulty during sexual intercourse and urinary tract infections.

Women who have inserted pessary can remove it on their own for cleaning purpose, follow up visit  should be done in every six to twelve months. During that time pessary will be removed and cleaned.

There can be some complications of using pessary such as foul smelling discharge which can be a sign of bacterial vaginosis which is an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in your vagina region. There can also be irritation or even damage inside the vaginal region.
