A dental implant is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. During the implant placement usually, five steps are followed such as Soft tissue reflection, which involves an incision over the crest of the bone, splitting the thicker attached gingiva roughly in half so that the final implant will have a thick band of tissue around it, followed by drilling at high speed and low speed, during which the pilot holes are placed with precision at highly regulated speed to prevent burning or pressure necrosis of the bone. Finally, there is the placement of the implant and tissue adaptation.

Frequently Asked Questions Related to Dental Implant

Dental implants provide strong foundation for the fixed teeth and they just appeal and feel like your own natural teeth.

Dental implants are used in replacing single tooth, multiple tooth or all set of teeth. The aim of dental implants is to restore the function as well as aesthetics of tooth.

There are many advantages to dental implants, including: Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent

Anyone who is healthy to undergo routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered as the candidate for dental implants. Patient gums and bone should be healthy enough for holding the implant. They must follow good oral hygiene and regular visits to dentist.

Some of the benefits of dental implants include:

  • Restores chewing function
  • Restores cosmetic appearance of face
  • Keeps the adjacent teeth stable
  • Prevents shrinking of jawbone due to bone loss

Yes, dental implants are definitely worth they can help to support healthy bite, keep teeth in their place and decreases the deterioration of bone. They preserve jawbone and they are beneficial to the overall beauty of your teeth.

Same-day implants can usually be done in a single procedure, ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the number of implanted teeth. However, it is important to note that you won't actually leave the office with your permanent teeth. But, you will leave with a full smile.

During the Procedure (2 Questions):

Dental Implants procedure will take around 30 minutes to 3 hours to complete depending on the number of teeth.

  • Damaged tooth are removed
  • If your existing jaw bone is not strong enough or lacks the amount of bone needed to hold an implant, the dentist will take a tiny bit of bone from elsewhere and then synthetic bone-grafting material can be used instead.
  • Once you have healed from any necessary tooth removal and bone grafting, your dentist will put the implant in place by cutting into the gum and then drilling into your jaw bone which serves as the tooth root and is implanted beneath the gum line.
  • When the implant is securely fused with the jawbone, your dentist will place a healing cap at the end of the implant — flush with your gum.
  • After the tissue around the cap heals, it is removed and replaced by the dental implant abutment. The abutment is screwed onto the implant and then a temporary crown is placed on top of it.
  • While you're wearing the temporary crown, the permanent crown will be made. It may take two to three weeks to make a permanent crown. The crown can be either cemented or screwed to the abutment.

Post the Procedure (4 Questions):

You have to do regular brushing, flossing, rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash and going for regular dental checkups.

There are always some risks and complications associated with this procedure.  Careful planning is necessary to make sure that patient is healthy enough to undergo surgery. Some of the risks associated with the procedure includes pain, swelling, bleeding, numbness at the infection site.
