Artificial Lumbar Disc Replacement
A lumbar disk replacement is a type of back surgery. It involves replacing a worn or degenerated disk in the lower part of the spine with an artificial replacement made of medical-grade metal or a combination of medical-grade metal and medical-grade plastic.
It is performed under general anaesthesia. Surgical procedure can take 2-3 hours.
- A team of surgeons (usually a vascular surgeon and an orthopaedic or neurosurgeon) will perform the procedure together.
- An incision will be made in the abdomen.
- Organs and blood vessels will be moved to the side to allow access to the spine.
- After this the damaged disk or disks is removed & a new artificial disk is placed.
- In the end the incision will be closed and the patient will be moved into a recovery suite for close monitoring.
Patient will have to stay in the hospital for 2-4 days. Complete recovery can take few weeks to few months.
