Most root canals can be done in one to two appointments. The first appointment is the procedure itself when the infected pulp is removed. The second (and maybe third) appointment is when the root canal gets cleaned and filled with a crown or other filling to prevent infections.

Depending on the infection and the type of medication the dentist chooses for your treatment, the period of time between the two appointments will vary. Most of the time, the second visit is between 1 and 3 weeks following the first.

A root canal procedure sounds scary, but with today's technology, it's typically not a whole lot more different than having a deep filling. There's little to no pain because the dentist will use local anesthesia to numb tooth and gums so you're comfortable during the procedure.
