Ballon mitral valvotomy is the surgical procedure which is being done for opening the narrowed valve it is being done in patients who have mitral valve stenosis and in older patients who have aortic stenosis but they are not able to undergo surgery.
Ballon mitral valvuloplasty is needed in those patients who have symptoms of mitral valve stenosis, in older patients having aortic valve stenosis and some patient having pulmonic valve stenosis.
Before the procedure patient need to undergo blood tests, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram and echocardiogram. You will not be allowed to eat or drink anything before the procedure.
Balloon mitral valvuloplasty usually lasts for five to seven years but it is safe to repeat the procedure.
Balloon valvotomy is being done by cardiologist or by an specialized team of nurses and technicians.
Balloon mitral valvotomy will take around one hour to complete under general anaesthesia.
Balloon valvotomy is a non-surgical procedure performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory by a cardiologist and a specialized team of nurses and technicians.Long, slender tubes called catheters are first placed into blood vessels in the groin and guided into the chambers of the heart. The cardiologist then creates a tiny hole in the wall between the upper two chambers of the heart which provides an opening of the left atrium with a special catheter which has a balloon at its tip, the catheter is positioned so the balloon tip is directly inside the narrowed valve. The balloon is inflated and deflated several times to widen the valve opening. Once the cardiologist has determined that the opening of the valve has been widened enough, the balloon is deflated and removed.
The recovery time of the procedure will take several hours to few days.
Do not bend your legs during this time to prevent bleeding. You should not eat anything until the catheter has been removed from your groin. You will be able to return to most of your normal activities the day after the procedure.
You should immediately inform your doctor if you are experiencing some symptoms such as fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, unusual swelling or weight gain, along with bleeding, swelling pain or change in skin color or at groin site.
Some of the risks of balloon valvuloplasty includes bleeding at the site of catheter insertion, blood clot or damage to the blood vessels at site of insertion, infection at the catheter insertion site.
Balloon valvotomy is a procedure that may relieve many of the symptoms of valve disease, but it will not cure valve disease. Some patients may continue to need medications, even after a successful procedure.
