He is a recipient of various ICMR and other National Societies Award for contribution in the field of Cardiology.
In 1997, he performed the first implantation of Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in South Asia & has been featured in the LIMCA Book of World Records.
He introduced Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in India and got listed in the LIMCA Book of World Records for the same.
He has been honored with various recognitions including Dr B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category.
In 2006, he was awarded Padma Bhushan Award.
After completing MBBS from Punjab University in 1973, he pursued MD in Medicine from PGIMER in 1976 followed by DM in Cardiology from PGIMER in 1989.
