He graduated from the University of Barcelona with a bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery in 1965.
In 1972, he graduated from Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, with a specialty in general surgery.
He performed the first extracorporeal circulation operation in 1975. He has conducted over 10,000 heart surgery procedures since then.
He has experience in cardiac transplants. From the time of the CS of Terrassa, he and his father, Dr. Antoni Caralps I Massó, performed roughly 60 heart and heart-lung transplants in animals under extreme hypothermia on an experimental basis.
In 1967, he saw Prof. Kantrowitz perform the world's second and fourth human heart transplants in New York. In May 1984, he and Dr. Ars performed the first human heart transplant at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona.
He conducted the first heart transplant in patients with renal insufficiency in 1987, and they later had a kidney transplant as well.
