Tethered spinal cord syndrome is a neurologic disorder caused by tissue attachments that limit the movement of the spinal cord within the spinal column. These attachments cause an abnormal stretching of the spinal cord. During the Spine Detethering surgery, the neurological surgeon makes an incision in the lower back to expose the site where the spinal cord is pinned, then frees it by releasing the stuck portion of the cord. The neurosurgeon may also repair any developmental abnormality during this operation.

When tethered cord occurs there is no movement of spinal cord within the spinal column. When child begins to grow the spinal cord get stretched and may not work properly, a surgery may be needed to move the spinal cord freely.

The complication rate of the surgery is only 1-2%. Some of the complications includes infection, bleeding and damage to spinal cord which can decrease muscle strength and bladder and bowel functions.

Tethered spinal cord surgery lasts for about two to four hours, even though child has to stay in hospital for four to seven day after surgery.

First an incision is made in the back and a piece of bone is cut from spinal column where spinal cord is tethered. Then the surgeon will cut and release what is holding cord to spinal column. After which the spinal cord moves freely.

This surgery aims to correct the spinal curvature and to maintain the natural growth of the spine, its mobility and function.

Post the Procedure (4 Questions):

You have to stay in hospital for about four to seven days after surgery. You have to lay flat in your bed for about 24 to 72 hours after surgery.

It will take few weeks for the incisions and the muscles to heal completely. You have to limit your physical activity during this recovery period.

You should call your doctor if you experience some symptoms such as sign of infection, redness, swelling, bulging near the incision, numbness and tingling sensation.

Pain and swelling are very common for the first few days of the surgery. Medicines will help in recovery.
