Radical Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure which is used for removing the prostate gland and the attached seminal vesicles. This is the treatment option for mane with localized prostate cancer. In this surgery the lymph nodes present near the prostate can also be removed at same time.
In prostatectomy localized prostate cancer is being treated this procedure may be done alone or it can be combined with radio, chemo and hormonal therapy. In radical prostatectomy surgery the entire prostate gland surrounding the lymph nodes is being removes for treating men with localized prostate cancer.
In radical prostatectomy there is low risk of complications. There are very rare chances of having death or any disability.
Yes, radical prostatectomy is a major surgery but as like all major surgery it has got some risks such as bleeding after surgery and you may need blood transfusion.

It will take about 2 to 4 hours to complete the surgery. In this surgery a cut is being made just below your belly button which reaches your pubic bone.
Before surgery you have to undergo few tests to determine the extent of disease such as blood test, transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsy. Some selected patient will need a bone scan, CT scan, MRI of the abdomen and pelvis.
Various types of anesthesia are required before surgery, spinal or epidural anesthesia are given into the space near spinal cord. In some cases general anaesthesia is also given during the procedure which allows patients to be asleep or unconscious during this procedure.
In radical prostatectomy the entire prostate gland and the seminal vesicles are being removed. When you remove the prostate gland and the seminal vesicle the bladder is being reattached to the urethera. A catheter is left in bladder which allows drainage of the urine during healing. Along with it a tube is left which drains out the fluid accumulated.
Healing takes 2 weeks,you need to wear catheter till then

IV pain killers are given, you need to walk everyday, discharged in 4 to 5 days and return to hospital with catheter in place

No weight lifting more than 9 kg and no exercising, jogging, swimming, treadmill for minimum of 6 weeks
Tube is being placed till two to three days after the procedure.
Yes, it is possible for a prostate cancer to return after prostatectomy, according to a study it was seen that prostate cancer return in 20-40 percent of men after 10 years of radical prostatectomy.
Some of the side effects or radical prostatectomy surgery are urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. These are some common side effects and they can occur with some other form of prostate cancer treatment also.
It will take around four to six weeks to recover completely after the procedure. You have to visit your doctor in every six weeks after the procedure. During your first year you have to visit your doctor thrice and in second year you have to visit your doctor thrice.
