Deep Brain Stimulation

It involves embedding electrodes within certain areas of your brain. Electrical impulses are produced by these electrodes that regulate abnormal activities of impulses. These electrical impulses can also affect certain cells and chemicals within the brain. A pacemaker-like device is placed under the skin in your upper chest to control the amount of stimulation.  The electrodes in your brain are connected with a wire that travels under your skin.

Deep brain stimulation treats the following conditions:

  • Addiction
  • Chronic pain
  • Cluster headache
  • Dementia
  • Depression (major)
  • Dystonia
  • Epilepsy
  • Essential tremor
  • Huntington's disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Stroke recovery
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Traumatic brain injury

Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery

Procedure

  • Brain surgery- A special head frame will be placed at the surgery portion to keep your head still during the procedure. It is known as a stereotactic head frame. Using an MRI your brain will be mapped and the area in your brain where the electrodes should be placed will be identified. General anesthesia will be required to make you unconscious. Or local anesthesia can also be used to numb your scalp before the procedure. A thin wire has then implanted that leads with several electrodes at the tips into a specific area of your brain. A pulse generator is implanted near your collarbone with a wire that runs under your skin. Your brain is carefully monitored to ensure correct electrode placement by your neurologist and surgeon during the surgery.

  • Chest Wall Surgery-The surgeon implants the part of the device that contains the batteries during the second part of your surgery. It is placed under the skin in the chest, near your collarbone. It is done under general anesthesia where wires from the brain electrodes are placed under the skin and guided down to the battery-operated pulse generator. To send continuous electrical pulses to your brain, a generator is programmed. Using a special remote control the generator can be put on or off.

Take away

Deep brain stimulation does not completely cure the disease, it helps to lessen the symptoms. If it works properly, a quick improvement in your symptoms will be observed. Some cases may require medications for certain conditions. It may not be necessarily successful for everyone. Talk with your doctor before the surgery about what type of improvement you can expect for your condition. Follow all the instructions and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
