A trabeculectomy is a surgical procedure to treat glaucoma. Glaucoma occurs when the fluid the eye produces, called aqueous humor, is unable to drain normally. This causes the intraocular pressure (IOP) to increase over time, possibly resulting in vision loss or blindness if left untreated. It is done along with Olagen implant, which is is a biodegradable, porcine, porous collagen implant developed to improve long-term results of trabeculectomy by reducing subconjunctival fibrosis.
In conventional surgery, a tiny drainage hole is made in the sclera (the white part of the eye). This procedure is known as trabeculectomy or sclerostomy. This opening allows fluid to drain out of the eye under the delicate membrane covering the eyeball known as the conjunctiva.
