Yes, pelvic floor reconstruction is a major surgery which restores the strength and integrity of the pelvic floor by checking each of the prolapsing organ by either rebuilding the supporting layer or by removing the fallen organ.
You may need pelvic floor reconstruction surgery if you are having painful sex, pelvic pressure, urinary incontinence, and difficulty during bowel movement, difficulty in inserting or wearing tampons.
Pelvic floor surgery aims at relieving the symptoms of vaginal bulging and laxity and they improve the bowel function without interfering with the sexual function. The success rate of the surgery are said to be 80-90 percent and there are chances that the prolapse may reoccur in the wall of vaginal wall.
There can be slight pain and discomfort in your lower abdomen for the first few days after your surgery. When you are leaving the hospital you will be providing with painkiller to get relief from pain.
Pelvic floor therapy seems like unusual and invasive but this is quite effective also, patient can see a good success rate and they can see an improvement in their quality of life after the treatment even though the efficacy of treatment depends on the severity of the condition being treated.
Pelvic organ prolapse surgery is being done by a Gynaecologist and a Urologist.
It will take around half an hour to five hour to perform pelvic floor reconstruction surgery depending on the internal anatomy, shape of the pelvis, weight of the patient and presence of scarring or inflammation.
In pelvic floor reconstruction surgery a small cut is being made in the front region of the vagina so that the bladder and the urethra can be placed back into its place. After that the supporting tissues are stitched for providing better support to your bladder and urethra.
It will take around four to six weeks to recover completely from surgery, you have to avoid lifting heavy objects while you are recovering so that your incision can heal.
You can walk after three months of your surgery till then you will be allowed to walk without crutches and then you can return back to your normal life.
You will be in hospital for overnight or for few days after surgery. Many women can go home when they can easily empty their bladder. In some rare cases a catheter may be needed you will still need to go home you will come back in a week or two to have the catheter removed.
If proplapse is being left untreated it will stay with you for some time and then it may slowly get worse and in some rare cases severe prolapse can occur which can cause obstruction of the kidneys or urinary retention which can result in damage to the kidney.
Prolapse surgery once done makes the vagina tighter and you may also have to go for vaginoplasty surgery.
