If just adhesions are removed, you may be admitted to the hospital for a few days. You should be able to resume your usual routine in 1 to 2 weeks. An adhesion is a band of scar tissue that joins two surfaces of the body that are usually separate this is developed because of tissue disturbance caused by surgery, infection, injury or radiation.
You can go for abdominal adhesion surgery if the abdomen adhesions causes’ complication or symptoms then surgery is needed to treat adhesion.
Adhesion develops when the body tries to repair itself, this can be seen after surgery. If the cells are repaired within the body you cannot tell the difference between one organ and the another and if the organ undergoes repair or come in contact with another organ then scar tissue are formed to connect the two surfaces.
Mostly adhesions shows no signs and symptoms, but they can cause pain by pulling nerves within an organ, pain with deep breathing, pain due to obstruction or pain from tugging during exercise, pain during intercourse, shortness of breath, chest pain or difficulty in breathing, fever, cramp in stomach, stretching of bowel.
It will take around 1 to 3 hours to perform adhesion surgery under general anaesthesia.
Two common surgical techniques used to treat abdominal adhesions are laparoscopy and laparotomy. In laparoscopy a small camera is being placed into your body through a small hole in skin and then the adhesions are cut and released. In laparotomy, a larger incision to directly see adhesions and treat them. The technique varies depending on specific circumstances.
You will feel weak and tired after surgery, you may also have some pain in your belly and near your incision the pain will get better. The pain will become better in the next few weeks. You can return back to your normal activities after 2 to 4 weeks.
Adhesion are the most common post surgical complication which affects around 50 to 90 percent of people who have undergone abdominal surgery. Even though most of them experience few symptoms while some of them suffer from chronic pain, infertility and bowel obstruction.
Small bowel obstructions (SBO) is the most common complication of adhesions.
