Know about brain surgery

The term "brain surgery" refers to a variety of medical treatments aimed at correcting structural issues with the brain. There are several different kinds of brain surgery. The type of treatment depends on the brain region and the disease being treated. The best neurosurgeons in India may now operate on parts of the brain without making a single incision in or near the skull because of advances in medical technology.

Brain surgery is used to treat physical problems with the brain. These can be caused by a birth flaw, an illness, an accident, or a variety of other issues. If you have any of the following problems in or around your brain, you may need brain surgery such as abnormal blood vessels, an aneurysm, bleeding, blood clots, Parkinson’s disease, pressure after a head injury, skull fracture, a stroke, brain, tumor fluid building up in the brain, etc.

What are the types of brain surgery?

Craniotomy. A portion of the skull is removed to provide surgeons access to the brain to remove a brain tumor, abnormal tissue, blood, or blood clots, alleviate pressure after an accident or stroke, repair a brain aneurysm, or treat other brain disorders. After surgery, the portion of the skull is replaced. The bone that was taken is restored after the procedure, the muscle and skin are stitched together, and a drain is inserted inside the brain to collect any extra blood from the surgery.

Neuroendoscopy. A tiny tube called an endoscope is threaded through the mouth, nose, or small incisions in the skull to access or remove brain tissue in this minimally invasive procedure. The endoscope is equipped with a light and a camera, and the operation is carried out using instruments inserted through the endoscope. One kind of neuroendoscopy is endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery, also known as endoscopic pituitary surgery. The endoscope is threaded through the nose to remove brain tumors and lesions around the pituitary gland, which is located immediately beneath the bridge of the nose.

Biopsy. A tiny piece of brain tissue or a tumor is removed so that it may be viewed under a microscope. A tiny incision and hole in the skull are required for this procedure.

Deep brain stimulation. This operation, like a biopsy, begins with a small incision in the skull, but instead of removing tissue, your surgeon will place a small electrode into a deep part of the brain. Electrical impulses will be delivered from the electrode to a battery in the chest, similar to a pacemaker, to aid with symptoms of various diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
